    Dear Collective Expert,

We are seeking your expertise to review our draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the application of our Social Licence app.

We have allocated a total review budget of $500, and comments will be accepted until 30 December 2026. Please also remember to validate comments from other reviewers that you consider valuable to the discussion.

The draft document is deliberately brief and is intended to encourage discussion and constructive feedback that will help inform the development of the final publishable version.

The draft identifies geographic representation and sampling as important issues, but the final SOP should specify how these will be addressed before a survey begins.

I recommend defining the assessment unit—company, project or activity—and the affected community in advance. Geographic boundaries should reflect potential environmental impacts, such as downstream catchments or areas exposed to emissions, rather than relying solely on administrative boundaries or distance from a site. GIS could support this process. Results should be reported separately for affected communities where aggregation could conceal different experiences.

Open public voting should also be clearly distinguished from a representative survey. A high response count, or participation by a fixed percentage of the population, does not establish representativeness when respondents are self-selected. Each published result should identify the recruitment method, response count, geographic coverage, collection period and limitations.

Finally, insufficient data, undecided responses and neutral opinions should have distinct meanings. A traffic-light rating should not imply stronger evidence of community acceptance than the survey design supports.
